growing habits of beaked hazelnuts.

I am writing to pick your brain about growing habits of beaked hazelnuts. I have several clumps from conservation sale stock- they have grown tall (after 8 years?) This year the nuts were enormous, i.e. the shells were- inside was little or no meat. I also want to move one large clump (six" radius) to a different location without too much "loss". The wildlife gets most of the nuts (as it should be) but the half dozen or so total (filled out) nuts i have eaten were excellent. best to u-all earl

Forum: Ask a Professional

lumbering on the property next door- anything I need to know?

my neighbor - who owns land next to me but I think lives in NY - is having trees timbered or forested from her property. The trucks seem to come and go, and sometimes it is a little noisy, but not all that bad really. I've met the fellows doing the work, and they seem like good guys. On the other hand, it seems like these big machines could do some damage, and I think there might be wetlands on the property. Is this a problem? As the neighbor do I need to know anything about this lumbering - is it controlled by laws? Might they be coming on to my land? Should I be doing something here, or is it simply none of my business? I do wonder about the deer I see cross from my land to hers, and think that habitat doesn't start or stop at our human boundary lines. So is there anything I could or should be doing? call me curious.

Forum: Ask a Professional

is there a bug killing hemlocks, and what should we do?

There is alot of hemlock on our land and it seems I've heard somewhere about a new bug that will kill it. the adeljid? My husband likes our hemlocks because they are shady and cool in the summer- we have a small stream that runs through them, and he says the shade is good for brook trout. I like the hemlocks - they just look old and gnarly, and it seems there are different birds in the hemlock grove. Is there anything we should be doing to save the hemlocks? I'd just hate to lose them.

Forum: Ask a Professional

Timber harvest volume estimator?

Are you aware of any volume-calculating software that's available to
private landowners? I know someone who is looking at harvesting some
forested lands, and he was asking if I knew where he could find something
similar to the old STEMS/TWIGS programs.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!
Forum: Ask a Professional

I have this really pretty vine growing in my yard.
hunting lease? how can I earn $ from my land for leasing out permission to hunt??

We own a good chunk of land, and cut every now and then, but were wondering about more annual income to help with taxes, road maintenance, boundary marking, and the expense of a forester. Is there a way we could formalize a lease with a group or club of hunters, giving them exclusive rights to hunt the land? Of course the question of liability comes up: can we get them to sign a waiver or something so we aren't liable if someone gets hurt? who polices such a lease?
I know I've heard of this somewhere. maybe down south??

Forum: Ask a Professional

how can I get paid for my carbon in the trees on my woodlot?

I understand that carbon sequestered in trees is carbon that is not up in the atmosphere acting like a greenhouse gas and contributing to global climate change. and that my trees on my woodlot are taking up carbon during the growing season. I hear that there are ways "out there" that people who sequester carbon can get paid for it- for example, companies that send alot of carbon up into the atmosphere can buy carbon credits to offset the carbon that they are responsible for sending up into the atmosphere. and since they buy carbon credits, that means someone like me can s e l l carbon credits, since my trees are accumulating it.
now, my question is () :
how do I get paid for the carbon that I am accumulating on my woodlot?

Forum: Ask a Professional

who owns land near me?

I own land on a brook that flows into the middle branch of the Westfield river. But I don't live in the area. I'm interested in finding out who owns the land upstream and downstream from my land- I think there are some things we might do to improve trout habitat on that stream, and I think it might be good to put a bridge across the stream on my neighbor's land, but I don't think I have good banks that would support a bridge. where do I go to find out about who owns land in my town? the county seat? MA department of taxation?

Forum: Ask a Professional

easement and logging- can my family do both?

we've been talking to the local land trust, and feel we want to either sell or give away/donate an easement on our family's land. It is about 200 acres, and been in the family 2 generations. We want to make sure it is taken care of in the future. but the question is: some people say an easement is locking it up, and we can't ever touch it again. Our family has cut wood on the land periodically for years, both for firewood, and the occasional source of income. if we lock it up in an easement, are we giving up the right to cut wood and make a little money now and then? we don't want to butcher the land, but we also want to be able to still get a little income now and then.

Forum: Ask a Professional

I've got some nice, straight trees, and I think they are probably pretty valuable- at least that is what my cousin says. I was contacted last week by a guy who wants to lumber them, and he offered me $5,000 for them- and I could use the money. But I don't know if that is a good price or not.
